General characteristics
This Secondary Area covers much of the range of Yucatn Vireo Vireo magister, including the east Caribbean coast of the Yucatn peninsula, mainly eastern Quintana Roo state of Mexico, south through coastal Belize to Ambergris Cay, and also including offshore islands and cays such as Isla Mujeres off Quintana Roo and Belize Cays (Cay Corker, Turneffe Islands, Lighthouse and Glover's reefs) and the Bay Islands of Honduras (Howell and Webb 1995a). V.magister is also found on the islands of Cozumel (EBA 016) and Grand Cayman (Secondary Area s014), and through most of its range is a fairly common resident. The dominant vegetation of this coastal Secondary Area is mangrove, semi-deciduous forest and scrub. Some parts, especially in Quintana Roo, have suffered from tourist development, with sizeable areas of native scrub and mangrove destroyed. Large areas do nevertheless remain, some of them in protected areas, the most notable perhaps being the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve (5,282km2) in Quintana Roo.
