A wind farm project soon to be approved by authorities in the North Aegean islands of Lesvos, Limnos and Chios in Greece is being questioned and can only be described as ‘self-destructive’ by the Hellenic Ornithological Society and the Society for the Protection of the Environment and Cultural Heritage.

Arts and media seem to be increasingly interested in the protection of the environment and the beauty of the wildlife that surrounds us. BirdLife promoted several biodiversity photo competitions last year. A photo competition opened to young conservationists, launched by the Future for Nature Foundation, offers to reward winners with €50,000. Film is also becoming a popular wildlife art form: the tve biomovies competition offers a prize of US$ 1500 to talented amateur film makers for short films about important environmental issues.

Energy from the sun, wind and oceans can be harnessed without harm to Europe’s birds and other wildlife, but European and national governments must step up to the challenge, according to a report released on Tuesday 22 November, in Brussels. Leading conservation body BirdLife Europe has added its voice to call for a renewables revolution to combat climate change.
