Conservationists recognised in splitting of Philippine Hawk-owl complex

A new paper co-authored by BirdLife proposes that the hawk-owls of the Philippines form a complex of seven species from different islands and island groups, including two that have not previously been described at any taxonomic level. These two undescribed species have been given scientific names honouring two conservationists and long-term supporters of BirdLife International.

My Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM) colleagues were in Brussels for the 8th Asia-Europe Peoples Forum (AEPF) this week. The AEPF is an interregional network of progressive civil society organizations across Asia and Europe. It emerged in the 1996 from a common desire and need among organizations across the two continents to open up new venues for dialogue, cooperation and solidarity.

Last Thursday, the Green Con-vergence for Safe Food and Healthy Environment, a loose coalition of networks and NGOs, held its third Green State of Nature Address (SONA). We were very appreciative that DENR Secretary Ramon Paje stayed the entire day to hear out our long complaints, urgent pleas and sturdy arguments particularly on forestry issues and mining.

A few days ago, I watched Richard Gutierrez tell his TV audience the perils of buying exotic and endangered animals as pets. He elaborated that these animals especially those that are forest-dependent cannot survive in an urban setting. Some may do but will exhibit stress-induced movements or behavior.

I had a ticket for a seat across the grandstand. It was either going to be very hot or very wet. I thought hard whether to go or not. The temptation to watch the inaugural comfortably at home on the television was so inviting.

A week-long photo exhibit to celebrate Philippine Eagle Week at SM City North EDSA has attracted many passers by. It is a collection of photographs taken by professional German photographer Klaus Nigge whose work has been published in numerous U.S. and European publications including the National Geographic. The Philippine Eagle or the Haring Ibon is one of the world’s rarest raptors.
