The Mangrove Alliance: a natural solution to a tangled issue

A new alliance of BirdLife Partners and other organisations aims to conserve, restore and manage mangrove forests sustainably throughout the American tropics. The Neotropical Mangrove Conservation Alliance has already received a huge boost, with support from the MacArthur Foundation to coordinate activities put mangrove conservation actions in place at priority sites in the Caribbean islands.

How long will they stand?

The destruction of the world's mangrove forests is happening up to four times faster than the world's land-based forests, according to a new United Nations report. A study commissioned by the U.N. Environmental Program (UNEP) reports that one fifth (around 35,500 square kilometers) of the world's mangroves -- forests straddling both land and sea -- have been lost since 1980.
