European Parliament vote falls short of real CAP reform

On 13 March the European Parliament voted on the two of this year’s key policy issues; the EU Budget for the next seven years and the Common Agriculture Policy (CAP), which eats up 40% of it. Although Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) showed courage by rejecting the European Council’s deal on the budget, it seems that they lost their guts when it was time to vote for a real reform of the CAP.

A colony of White-headed ducks, a globally threatened species and extremely rare in the Ukraine, was seen at the Lake Yarylhach together with other rare birds. Despite the obvious importance of the Yarylhach wetland in terms of biodiversity richness, the conservation status of this area is at high risk.

On Friday 8 February, after months of discussions and a final 24 hour sprint session during the EU Summit, the 27 EU Heads of State, finally agreed on the EU budget for the period 2014-2020. The result is a blow to the environment. Not only is it a historically small budget, 908 billion euro compared to 970 billion euro for the current period (2007 – 2013), but it also entails an extermination of all expectations for greening.
