Monitoring birds in Montserrat’s Centre Hills

Forestry staff from Montserrat’s Department of Environment are currently in the field conducting the annual bird monitoring exercise to determine the bird populations in the island’s Centre Hills Important Bird Area.

Southern Cone Grasslands Alliance activities support shorebird conservation in Uruguay

Annually, the Buff-breasted Sandpiper and American Golden Plover undertake some of the longest journeys of any migratory birds in the world, from their breeding grounds in the tundra of North America to wintering sites in the grasslands of Southern South America. Aves Uruguay (BirdLife in Uruguay) and partners have secured approximately 3000 hectares for both species of shorebirds through good management practices of the natural grasslands.

Government protects critical habitat for the Grenada Dove

In August 2011, the Government of Grenada’s Cabinet approved the protection of the last piece of government-owned Grenada Dove habitat through the addition of approximately 100 acres (c.40 ha) of the Beausejour Estate to the adjacent Perseverance Protected Area and Dove Sanctuary.

Haiti´s inland mangroves disappear under rising waters

As part of a Haiti-wide mangrove survey, the Fondation pour la Protection de la Biodiversité Marine (FoProBiM) has undertaken visits to Trou Caïman and Lac Azuéi Important Bird Areas to search these brackish lakes for remnants of inland mangroves.

The Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática has just published the first ever Red Data Book for Cuban terrestrial vertebrates. The book provides a detailed baseline on the conservation status for 165 species of freshwater fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

Alarm in Paraguay at settlement plans for Ñacunday National Park

Paraguayan environmental organizations including Guyra Paraguay (BirdLife in Paraguay) are alarmed at the recent decision of the national government to actively promote the settlement of small-scale farmers (‘campesinos’) within the Ñacunday National Park. The decision to promote a solution which flouts both national legislation and international conventions, sets a worrying precedent for other protected areas in the country.
