South Africa is flooding, and the extent of destruction in some areas is unprecedented. Lives have been lost, families uprooted and livelihoods destroyed. The money required to repair the devastation runs into millions of Rand. It would be fair to question why BirdLife South Africa is promoting the celebration of World Wetlands Day with the link between wetlands and water during these trying times.

Of the 10,000 bird species on Earth, 1,226 are listed as Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable. Forty of these occur in South Africa and of these 20 are endemic. Although extinction is a natural phenomenon, species are now disappearing from our planet at an alarming rate, and studies have shown that this is mostly driven by human activities.

How artwork is helping save the albatross – by Meidad Goren

For over 30 years Bruce Pearson, a professional artist, has worked on a range of themes to convey his enthusiasm for wildlife and especially birds, giving a sense of wonder to the wild places they inhabit. More recently he has focused some of his time on developing creative links between art and conservation as a contribution towards a wider effort by an informal grouping of artists, writers, musicians, poets and others inspired by the natural world.

Birdlife South Africa (BirdLife Partner) are concerned the beautiful but noisy game of football, with its cheering crowds and vuvuzelas, might have an adverse affect on birds in the area. Executive Director Mark Anderson, said the sounds emitted from the World Cup revelry might cause certain species of birds to abandon their nests and leave their eggs vulnerable to predators.

Three charismatic southern African birds heading for extinction

Three of South Africa’s flagship bird species have moved closer to extinction, according to BirdLife on behalf of the 2010 IUCN Red List. The African Penguin’s status has changed from Vulnerable in the 2009 category to Endangered, the Ludwig’s Bustard from Least Concern to Endangered and the Southern Ground Hornbill from Least Concern to Vulnerable.

BirdLife South Africa (BirdLife Partner) joined forces with other organizations to react with dismay to the receipt of information suggesting that there is interest in the hunting of Houbara Bustard by means of falcons in South Africa. According to information received, there is intention by falconers to establish a Houbara Bustard breeding facility in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa and to release and hunt these bustards with large exotic falcons.
