BirdLife International has a network of NGOs and individuals in nineteen countries and territories in the Americas: Canada, Chile, United States, Bahamas, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Belize, El Salvador, Panama, Mexico, Suriname, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil and the Falkland Islands (Malvinas).
Six BirdLife Partners in the Americas, together with the global Rio Tinto-BirdLife program and local conservation groups, have successfully completed three years of conservation efforts for migratory birds along the Interior-Pacific flyways. These efforts have built on an existing initiative, “Linking Communities”, at three key sites (complexes of IBAs) in North America, and have supported the planning and implementation of conservation and education actions at six IBAs in South America.

Paraguayan environmental organizations including Guyra Paraguay (BirdLife in Paraguay) are alarmed at the recent decision of the national government to actively promote the settlement of small-scale farmers (‘campesinos’) within the Ñacunday National Park. The decision to promote a solution which flouts both national legislation and international conventions, sets a worrying precedent for other protected areas in the country.

October is the month to celebrate birds in the Americas, and as in previous years, both BirdLife Partner and non-partner organizations are joining the celebrations.
At least 12 organizations have already started their celebratory activities, ranging from outdoor walks, birding tours, painting and photography competitions, and educational talks, among others.

Octubre es el mes de las Aves en las Américas y como es usual, organizaciones socias y no socias de BirdLife se unen este año a la misma.
Al menos 12 organizaciones han iniciado ya sus actividades que van desde caminatas al aire libre, visitas de observación de aves, concursos de pintura y fotografía, charlas educativas, entre otras.

La noticia de la muerte de aves en EEUU y Suecia recorrió el mundo, cayeron “del cielo” 500 aves en Louisiana, 3000 en Arkansas, docenas en Suecia; algo muy extraño, pero nada probado aún. No hay evidencia científica que explique lo que está sucediendo. El socio de Guyra Paraguay en los EEUU, la Sociedad Audubon, está haciendo el seguimiento de miles de aves halladas muertas en Arkansas, junto el segundo incidente en Luisiana, desde la víspera de Año Nuevo.

A new alliance of BirdLife Partners and other organisations aims to conserve, restore and manage mangrove forests sustainably throughout the American tropics. The Neotropical Mangrove Conservation Alliance has already received a huge boost, with support from the MacArthur Foundation to coordinate activities put mangrove conservation actions in place at priority sites in the Caribbean islands.
