BirdLife Botswana (BLB) joined in the national World Environment Day celebrations in Botswana, organized by the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism (MEWT) in Mokhomma Village.

The day was successfully organized by MEWT in collaboration with the Mabutsane Sub District and Debswana Diamond Mining Company, and included the participation of 104 exhibitors including schools, government departments, NGOs, parastatal organisations, and youth organisations. The growing number of exhibitors over the years, especially schools, indicates that this commemorative event is becoming one of the well-known popular environmental events in Botswana. Welcome remarks were made by Kgosi Siver Nthomang, and traditional dancers and a choir from the local group entertained the audience.

BLB were represented by Lesego Ratsie and Yukiko Maki-Murakami from the BirdLife Botswana Gaborone Office. These representatives managed a stall, answered many queries, recruited new member schools and disseminated information to interested visitors. Significantly, BLB won second prize in the “NGO products” category, competing with six other NGOs, and they received a cash award of 900 pula (GBP 75)!

It was a memorable day for BirdLife Botswana, especially to be acknowledged by the general public.
