Delegates at the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), in Bergen, Norway adopted new guidelines on how to avoid birds being killed by power line collisions and electrocutions.
Dr Markus Nipkow, Officer for Ornithology and Bird Conservation of NABU/BirdLife Germany explains how the danger of powelines to birds can be mitigated.

This will be so helpful for the UNDP-GEF/BirdLife International’s Conservation of Migratory Soaring Birds programme along the Rift Valley/Red Sea flyway. I hope those involved with the programme will distribute it widely in the Middle East. I will be passing it to colleagues in Iraq and Yemen – and will mention it in a broadcast I am doing shortly on conservation in Yemen, which will include mention of the threats to soaring birds.
I would also find it helpful to have a copy of the review and technical guidelines (mentioned above)to disseminate to others.

good morning
a very interesting interview with Dr Markus Nipkow on the impact of powerlines.
I am currently commenting on an application in the UK which transect a goose flyway & has a relatively high predicted mortality.
to help me provide the best advice, can you provide links to the ‘comprehensive review of powerline impacs with the A-E flyway’ and a copy of the ‘technical guidelines’, teferred to by Markus in his interview.
