It’s time to do something about seabird bycatch, says EU Commissioner Damanaki

EU Commissioner Damanaki received representatives of BirdLife International so that they could deliver the pledges of 23,000 citizens, urging the Commission to do something about the by-catch of seabirds in longline operations.

Fishing gear in EU waters is estimated by BirdLife International and the RSPB (BirdLife in the UK) to have killed two million seabirds in the past ten years.

“It’s time to do something. I’m completely convinced about this”, Commissioner Damanaki announced.

During the meeting, BirdLife presented the Commissioner with a montage image of a Cory’s Shearwater – made up from 23,000 images of seabirds.
