Dear Peter Maddison I have just read your words in honour of Don Merton via a BirdLife International news alert. I did actually write a personal note expressing my appreciation for Don's marvellous work in New Zealand, although I am not sure where it ended up. I knew him well during the time I worked as International Conservation Assistant to the late Sir Peter Scott and later when he visited Birdlife (probably then ICBP) in Cambridge when we went out on a memorable boat trip together on the River Cam in my not very large dinghy. Happy days. I always visualise those large, kind hands holding those small Chatham Island Black Robins. It is certainly people like Don who make the world a better place. Kind regards, Jane Fenton
