Mission of the organisation

The BirdLife China Programme is a collaboration between the BirdLife International Secretariat and Hong Kong Bird Watching Society, which seeks to promote the conservation of species, sites and habitats in mainland China through the following activities:

  •  Support for the development of birdwatching and conservation organisations in mainland China, including building their capacity through the provision of training and information on bird conservation
  •  Projects for the conservation of globally threatened bird species in mainland China, including the Critically Endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Chinese Crested Tern and Blue-crowned Laughingthrush
  •  Preparation of the IBA inventory for China, and promotion of actions for the conservation and monitoring of these globally important sites, including the China Coastal Waterbird Census
  •  Stimulation of greater public interest in birdwatching, and awareness of the need for biodiversity conservation
  •  Promotion of the urgent actions needed for the conservation of the highly threatened Yellow Sea and China Sea coastal wetlands and the migratory birds which are dependent upon these inter-tidal habitats
  •  Further development of the China Conservation Fund to support actions for threatened species and IBAs
