Mission of the organisation
SAVE Brasil strives to conserve birds, their habitats and global biodiversity, working with people towards sustainability in the use of natural resources.
Science & Biodiversity: SAVE Brasil’s work is focused on the research and conservation of threatened birds and on the identification and monitoring of Important Bird Areas (IBAs). Among the results achieved in this area are the creation of protected areas, the development and implementation of threatened birds conservation plans and the definition with the government of priority areas for biodiversity conservation.
Education & Dissemination: SAVE Brasil aims to raise awareness about the importance of birds and biodiversity in general through communication campaigns, events, seminars and educational activities. Media bodies are also involved in order to put birds and the need of their conservation in the public eye.
Sustainable Development: SAVE Brasil believes in a harmonious relation between birds and people and, works with environmentally sustainable economic alternatives and good governance instruments to improve people’s quality of life and empower local communities. The work includes advisory and capacity building on ecology-based agriculture, handicrafts and cooperatives.
Science & Biodiversity:
Launching, in 2006, of the book Áreas Importantes para a Conservação das Aves no Brasil: parte 1 – estados do domínio da Mata Atlântica (Important Bird Areas in Brazil), which describes the 163 most important sites for birds in 15 Brazilian states that contain Atlantic Forest: Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Paraíba, Paraná, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Sergipe.
Lobbying with the Brazilian Government for the creation of the Murici Ecological Station, in 2001, a protected area of 6.116 hectares located in Alagoas state, in one of the most important areas in the world for bird conservation.
Acquisition of 465 hectares to create a private reserve in the Serra das Lontras IBA, in Southern Bahia.
Technical support given to the Brazilian Government in the creation of the Serra das Lontras National Park, approximately 16.000 hectares.
Acquisition of 360 hectares in the Serra do Urubu Forest Complex, located in Pernambuco state, North-eastern Brazil, to create a private reserve.
Technical support given to the Brazilian Government for the creation of a public protected area in the Boa Nova IBA, Bahia state, approximately 32.000 hectares.
Articulation with the Institute Chico Mendes of Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) for the creation of a public protected area in the Restinga de Maçambaba IBA, Rio de Janeiro state, habitat of the critically endangered Restinga Antwren Formicivora littoralis.
Support for the reintroduction of the Red-billed Curassow Crax blumenbachii in the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu, Rio de Janeiro state, through the development of environmental education actions involving the reserve’s surrounding communities.
Assessment of the Red-billed Curassow Crax blumenbachii population in the Reserva Biológica de Una and its surroundings, and in the Parque Nacional do Descobrimento, both in Bahia state.
Conclusion of the research on the Cherry-throated Tanager Nemosia roureiecology that was awarded the “Prêmio Ecologia 2006” in the Research category. The “Prêmio Ecologia” is an initiative organized by the Espírito Santo State Secretary of Environment and Water.
Development of the Conservation Action Plan for Albatrosses and Petrels, the Red-billed Curassow’s Crax blumenbachii, the Araripe Manakin Antilophia bokermanni, the Brazilian Merganser Mergus octosetaceus and the Restinga Antwren Formicivora littoralis in partnership with the Brazilian Environmental Agency and civil society organizations.
Education & Dissemination
Promotion of environmental education and awareness raising campaigns at 7 priority IBAs in Brazil: Chapada do Araripe (Ceará state), Serra do Urubu (Pernambuco state), Murici (Alagoas state), Serra das Lontras and Boa Nova (Bahia state), Restinga de Maçambaba (Rio de Janeiro state), and Pampas (Rio Grande do Sul state).
Support to the development of the Brazilian Bird Fair - Avistar
Contact and articulation with national and international media bodies to disseminate information about birds and their conservation.
Development of socioeconomic assessments and feasibility studies for the implementation of conservation plans.
Capacity building and professional support to farmers from the Serra das Lontras IBA on organic production, and to producers, cooperatives and associations on management and commercialization in national and international markets. Project has already benefited more then 400 cocoa producers and promoted the certification of 1,800 hectares of organic production.
Partnership with the Associação de Produtores de Carne do Pampa Gaúcho – Apropampa (Association of Farmers from the Rio Grande do Sul state) to promote cattle-breeding practices that are compatible with biodiversity conservation in the Pampas (Brazilian Grasslands).
Capacity building on ecology-based agriculture, handicrafts and cooperatives involving 10 communities in Brazil.
