The Migratory Landbirds Study Group (MLSG)

The Migrant Landbird Study Group (MLSG) is an initiative aimed at streamlining research efforts to better inform conservation policies for migratory landbirds in the African-Eurasian flyway region (particularly Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia). The MLSG provides platforms for professionals and amateurs involved in research, monitoring and conservation of migratory landbirds to access and share information. Participation is open to everyone with research interests in these birds, and the platforms for engagement include a website (to which individuals can create research profiles), Facebook group and a Twitter account (@MigrantLandbird).

The activities of the MLSG are managed by a MLSG Board. The inaugural meeting of the MLSG, themed ‘Migratory landbirds: research, monitoring and conservation’, took place in March 2014, in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, hosted by the Institute for Avian Research. The MLSG meeting format is designed to facilitate themed workshops that focus on identifying research synergies, building research networks and identifying key knowledge gaps, particularly those that are necessary to advance conservation action for this suite of species. MLSG participation through roundtable discussions and symposia at scientific conferences will also facilitate the networking of researchers.
