The Conservation of Migratory Birds (CMB) project is a BirdLife International initiative, with joint funding from MAVA Foundation and Vogelbescherming Nederland (VBN, BirdLife in The Netherlands),  recently announced the launch of a conservation project grant – the Young Graduates Research Project (YGRP) award. This award is targeted at MSc-level students conducting ongoing research on migratory bird species in Cape Verde, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone and the Gambia.

The CMB project is designed to increase understanding about the conservation status and needs of migratory birds and their habitats in West Africa, as well as establish cost-effective and sustainable monitoring systems that track changes in the status of migratory birds and their habitats. The CMB YGRP award is aimed at supporting the work of researchers in the West African region. The development and strengthening of technical capacity for flyway conservation in the region is essential, particularly towards ensuring individuals and organisations are well placed to attract new sources of funding to make conservation efforts along the West African coast financially sustainable.

It is intended that this initiative becomes a recurring award under the CMB project. The deadline for submission of applications for this first round of the award is 31st December, 2013.
