Overview

This initiative involves participative action planning for globally threatened birds in Africa that require concerted action across several countries for their conservation. So far, seven International Species Action Plans and 15 National Species Action Plans (SAPs) have been developed for globally threatened species. In the process, a standardised BirdLife Africa format and process for producing SAPs has been developed and is available in the form of a SAP development manual (PDF 410KB). In addition, Species Interest Groups (SIGs) have been formed to coordinate and monitor implementation of the existing SAPs.

Action in 2008

In 2008, there are concrete plans to develop at least two additional International Action Plans with support from the UNEP-CMS: (1) Madagascar Pond Heron (2) White-winged Flufftail. Technical support will also be provided towards development of a National Action Plan for the Lesser Flamingo in Kenya. All are invited to contribute information that may lead to better planning for these species. Efforts to implement conservation projects outlined in the existing SAPs will continue to be pursued.

How can you help/participate?

  1. Obtain copies of the action plans and take part or advocate implementation of the outlined actions (PDF downloads below or from contacts).
  2. Give us feedback on any progress in implementation of the action plans (contact: birdlife@birdlife.or.ke)
  3. Provide us with any reviews that may help in updating the existing action plans.
  4. Undertake 1-3 (above) for any other existing Bird Species Action Plans relevant to Africa (e.g. Lesser Flamingo, Maccoa Duck, Northern Bald Ibis, Sociable Lapwing, Corncrake, Great Snipe, Black-winged Pratincole, Sociable Lapwing etc.)
