Migratory species recorded in the Tropical Andes

Cerulean Warbler, a globally threatened migrant that visits the Tropical Andes
Zoom In

A total of 159 species of Neotropical migrants occur in the Tropical Andes, representing nearly one third of all Neotropical migrant species. A majority of all U.S. states and Canadian provinces support breeding populations of species that depend on this region.

A number of species including the Western Wood-pewee (Contopus sordidulus), Olive-sided Flycatcher (C. cooperi), Canada Warbler (Wilsonia canadensis), Cerulean Warbler (Dendroica cerulea), Upland Sandpiper (Bartramia longicauda), and Red-necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus) frequent the region or depend on specific areas as stopovers. It is estimated that as many as 300 million boreal breeding birds migrate to the Tropical Andes region.

The following links provide information on the status of each Neotropical migrant, with specific links to distribution maps for all of the Americas and the Tropical, a photo library, and a direct link to BirdLife’s World Bird Database that provides additional information on each species' global status.
