The Task Force meet twice a year to decide on priorities, develop policy positions and coordinate actions regarding the implementation of the Directives

The Task Force is a European working group of BirdLife International, which unites BirdLife Partners from across the European Union who are actively working with the two Nature Directives to achieve better protection of Important Birds Areas (IBAs) and bird species within the EU. That way we join forces, create synergies and build up capacities in our Partner organisations in order to achieve strong nature conservation in Europe.
The Task Force has a Coordinator appointed by the members of the Task Force and is supported in its work by the EU Nature Policy Officer at the BirdLife European Division in Brussels. It meets twice a year, usually in Brussels, to decide on priorities, develop policy positions, exchange best practices and coordinate actions regarding the implementation of the Directives.
The main activities of the Task Force are:
- To monitor and exchange information and experience regarding the implementation and enforcement of the Directives
- To build a network of experts from within BirdLife on the scientific, legal and pragmatic aspects of the Directives
- To develop, adopt and advocate positions on the interpretation and implementation of the Directives
- To influence the EU institutions and the various committees and working groups on priority issues regarding the Birds and Habitats Directives
- To push for effective enforcement of the provisions of the Directives
- To coordinate actions and campaigns to defend sites and species and to uphold the Directives’ obligations.
