BirdLife's World Bird Festival occurs every two years. This global event aims to raise public awareness of the importance of birds and their habitats, and at the same time, to promote the conservation of thousands of globally important sites upon which most of the world’s birds depend.
In 2006 the theme for the World Bird Festival was Important Bird Areas (IBAs) around the world. IBAs are found in almost every country and their conservation is crucial for maintaining healthy populations of birds.
Throughout the festival BirdLife promoted the link between birds and people and empowered local groups to take action for the protection of IBAs. Organisations from across the world participated in this event and IBAs were promoted in every country.
