The largest birdwatching event in the world!
WORLD BIRDWATCH was established in 1993 to promote the appreciation of nature through birding. The idea was to get as many people to go birdwatching over one weekend, and to record as many of the world's 10,000 species of birds as possible.
Since the first WORLD BIRDWATCH in 1993, more than 750,000 people have participated from all over the world. A total number of 184,376 people from 88 countries participated in the WORLD BIRDWATCH and World Bird Count held in 1997, and the number of species reported reached 5,935. The Guinness Book of World Records certified this as the largest birding event in the world.
The WORLD BIRDWATCH is called EuroBirdwatch in Europe. This event is celebrated annually during the first weekend of October and it is organised by BirdLife’s National Partners. To obtain more information of the 2008 event please visit the EuroBirdwatch 2008 page.
In 2008 WORLD BIRDWATCH will be held on October 4-5. For more information about participating organisations and their activities during this World Bird Festival, please contact the BirdLife's Communications Team.
